Glastonbury tax protest condemn U2
Doesn’t look like U2 were to get let off one single bit as protests over claims of tax avoidance came to the limelight at Glastonbury Festival 2011 – Bono’s band U2 headlined at the Glastonbury festival as members of Art Uncut, an offshoot of the larger direct action group UK Uncut, complained that 10 guards had used “heavy-handed” tactics on Friday night in their push to remove a massive 20ft inflatable banner stating directly to the legend “U pay your tax 2”.
The Irish band, who headlined the Pyramid stage on Friday night, has been criticised for shifting its commercial operations to the Netherlands, where royalties on music incur virtually zero tax. Approximately 30 activists had gathered in front of the stage hours before U2 began performing to make this bold statement.
As you can see, there is no letting off when it comes to tax and celebrities shouldn’t think they can elude the spotlight when it comes to tax.
