Government needs to address raw material shortages
The business group, The Material Security Working Group (MSWG), which includes a wide range of members including Friends of the Earth and the manufacturers' organisation, EEF, has asked the Government to be more proactive over the raw material shortage that is threatening the UK.
MSWG says that there are a number of reasons why the pressure is on, including environmental issues such as declining ecosystems, and global demand – and that nations are competing for resources. A recent poll amongst EEF members saw that 80% of important manufacturers see reduced resources as a serious threat to growth.
In March, the Government detailed opportunities to use non-renewable resources more efficiently, but MSWG wants more. They want to see a more ambitious plan that will tackle the potential crisis now and for the future – not just for the sake of the planet, but also so that manufacturers and the economy has a sustainable future.
