Stamps are on the up, up, up
After the regulator lifted a number of price controls on Royal Mail, it’s quickly become evident that we’re now going to be paying much more than usual for our postage – starting with first class stamps. A regular first class stamp will now cost 60 pence, rising from 46 pence after 30th April of this year.
Second class stamps have risen in price, too, rising from 36 pence to 50 pence, which is just 5 pence below what is allowed by regulator Ofcom.
The regulator has claimed that the future of this core service was actually at risk, and the only way of helping secure its future was by relaxing controls so that prices could be increased. These increases on both first and second class stamps mark the biggest increase, within one year and in terms of percentages since 1975. Will this help save Royal Mail or simple put people off using traditional mail?
